Rich Results

Rich Results are enhanced search results that display additional information like ratings, images, prices, or FAQs. They're powered by structured data.

Why It Matters for GEO

Pages with rich results typically have better structured data, which also helps AI engines understand and cite content more accurately.

Rich results are a visible signal that your structured data is working. When your FAQ appears as an expandable block directly in Google search results, it means Google has successfully parsed your FAQPage schema. The same schema that earns rich results is the same markup that AI engines use to extract and cite information. Achieving rich results is effectively a quality certificate for your structured data — and a shortcut to better GEO performance.

Common Rich Result Types

  • FAQ rich results
  • How-to steps
  • Product ratings/prices
  • Recipe cards
  • Event listings

Practical Example

A financial planning firm adds FAQPage schema to their "How to invest in index funds" guide. Google begins showing their FAQ questions as expandable answers directly in search results — a rich result. This doubles their click-through rate from organic search. At the same time, the structured FAQ data makes it easy for ChatGPT and Perplexity to extract specific answers from the page. The same investment in structured data improves both traditional SEO performance and AI citation frequency simultaneously.

Common Mistakes

  • Implementing schema but never validating: Structured data with syntax errors produces no rich results and no GEO benefit. Run every page through Google's Rich Results Test before publishing.
  • Marking up content not visible on the page: Google and AI engines reject schema that describes information users cannot see. Never mark up hidden or off-screen content.
  • Using outdated schema types: Schema.org evolves. Some older markup types are no longer supported for rich results. Check the current Google documentation to confirm which types qualify.
  • Treating rich results as a guarantee: Implementing valid schema increases your chance of rich results but does not guarantee them. Google and AI engines make final decisions based on quality, relevance, and competition.
