Google AI Overview

Google AI Overview (formerly SGE) is Google's AI-generated summary that appears at the top of search results for many queries.

Why It Matters for GEO

Being featured in AI Overview is premium visibility — shown before traditional organic results. It's the new "Position 0" for AI search.

The strategic importance is significant: AI Overviews appear before organic results, before paid ads in many cases, and can suppress click-through rates for positions below. If your competitor appears in AI Overviews for your target queries and you do not, they capture attention at the most critical moment — the instant a potential customer forms their question.

How to Optimize

  1. Allow Google-Extended in robots.txt
  2. Implement comprehensive Schema.org
  3. Create authoritative, well-structured content
  4. Build E-E-A-T signals
  5. Target informational queries

Practical Example

A French accounting firm wants to appear in Google AI Overviews for queries like "how to declare freelance income in France." They audit their content and find three issues: Google-Extended is not explicitly allowed in robots.txt, their guide has no FAQPage schema, and paragraphs average 90 words. After fixing all three issues in a single afternoon, their guide begins appearing in AI Overviews for the target query within four weeks. The firm receives three calls from prospects who found them via that overview — clients who were not previously finding the firm through traditional Google search.

Common Mistakes

  • Blocking Google-Extended unintentionally: Some security-focused robots.txt configurations block all non-Googlebot crawlers by default. Google-Extended is separate from Googlebot and must be explicitly allowed for AI Overview eligibility.
  • Focusing only on transactional queries: Google AI Overviews primarily appear for informational queries — "how to," "what is," "why does." Pages targeting only commercial keywords ("buy X," "best X service") miss the queries where AI Overviews appear most frequently.
  • Assuming good organic rankings guarantee AI Overview placement: A page ranking #3 organically may not appear in AI Overview, while a page ranking #15 might. Organic ranking and AI Overview placement are evaluated by different criteria.
  • Not differentiating AI Overview strategy from Featured Snippet strategy: Although the formats are similar, Google AI Overviews synthesize multiple sources rather than extracting from one page. You need breadth of coverage across a topic, not just one well-optimized page.
