Internal Linking

Internal Linking is the practice of connecting pages within the same website through hyperlinks. A strong internal link structure helps search engines and AI discover and contextualize content.

Why It Matters for GEO

AI engines follow internal links to understand a site's thematic structure. A well-linked glossary establishes semantic connections that AI uses to evaluate topical expertise.

Think of your website as a library. Without clear signs pointing between related books, a visitor — or an AI crawler — gets lost. Internal links are those signs. When your article on "GEO audits" links to your guide on "Schema.org" which links back to your service page, AI engines map that network and understand your site is a credible, thorough source on the topic. Sites with strong internal linking get cited more often.

How to Optimize

  1. Use contextual links within content (not just navigation)
  2. Write descriptive anchor text (avoid "click here")
  3. Create bidirectional links between pillar and cluster pages
  4. Include 3-5 internal links per page

Best Practices

  • Link to priority pages (services, pillars)
  • Use keyword-rich anchor text
  • Avoid excessive links (dilutes value)
  • Create thematic hubs (glossary pages)

Practical Example

A marketing agency has 40 blog posts but no internal links between them. Each post is an island. After adding contextual links — for example, the "What is GEO?" post links to the "GEO Audit Checklist" which links to the "Schema.org Setup Guide" — AI crawlers start mapping the topical cluster. Within weeks, the agency's content begins appearing in AI-generated answers about GEO, because the site now signals deep expertise through its interconnected content.

Common Mistakes

  • Only linking from navigation menus: Navigation links carry less weight than in-content links. AI engines value links embedded naturally within the text.
  • Generic anchor text: Phrases like "read more" or "click here" give AI no information about the target page. Use descriptive text like "GEO audit checklist" instead.
  • One-way links only: If your pillar page links to cluster pages but those cluster pages never link back, you waste link equity. Bidirectional linking strengthens authority for both pages.
  • Orphan pages: New service or guide pages with zero internal links pointing to them may never be discovered by AI crawlers, no matter how good the content is.
